Synopsis
In this largely pictorial work, the author looks at the rise and fall of picture theatres in Australia and their minor comeback in recent years. The cinema in cities and suburbs was dependent on film devotees attending. During the rise of the industry in the 1920s and 1930s large cinemas were built to cater for these people. The big picture theatres were the first to close when patronage fell during the 1950s due to competition from drive-in theatres and television. The subject makes an interesting study from both a theatrical and sociological aspect.
