Synopsis
TRAVELLING back to the West Coast of the United States on an extensive rail trip in 1983 the train,
The Californian Zephyr
, stopped at Truckee shortly past the Nevada/California border. As a rule I tried to assess a station in the short time the train was there as to its relative importance to the line. Truckee was more than a wayside stop, but not in the class of a major city station. Nevertheless it stays in my memory because it reminded me of Mount Evelyn on the former Warburton railway.
The two stations share some points in common. Both are on a high elevation, Truckee being 5817 feet (1773 metres) above sea level because it’s not far from the summit of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Mount Evelyn 738 feet (225 metres) above sea level, making it the highest point on the Warburton line. Both stations sit alongside the main street, which in each case has a decided incline as it runs parallel with the railway. Perhaps it was the sweep of the street at Truckee and its closeness to the tracks that brought Mount Evelyn to mind.
