Katherine Cummings is a professional librarian and awardwinning author who spent her first half-century as John Cummings. Since her transition from male to female in 1986 she has been an activist for the LGBTI community in general and transgendered people in particular.
She wrote and delivered a radio series, “Katherine’s Diary”, that ran on the ABC Radio National’s “Health Report” for over two years. The full-length print autobiography (also called Katherine’s Diary) that grew out of these talks won the Australian Human Rights Award for Non-Fiction in 1992. Katherine’s Diary was revised and expanded at the end of 2007. Since 2001 Katherine has been employed at the NSW Gender Centre, an NGO established in 1983 to help people with gender issues. She is the Information and Resources Worker for the Gender Centre and edits the Centre’s quarterly magazine, Polare. Some of the essays and editorials included in this book appeared first in Polare and have been re-written to suit a work that should have a longer use-by date than that of a magazine operating on a three-month publication cycle.
