Synopsis
ABOVE the scoreboard at the Melbourne Cricket Ground were the words of the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin: ``The Olympic Movement tends to bring together in a radiant union all the qualities which guide mankind to perfection’’.
ACCOMODATION for visitors was greatly helped by many Melbourne residents volunteering to put up people in their own homes. Some 15,000 beds were made available from about 6000 householders to meet this end. Group accommodation also was arranged and the colleges of the University of Melbourne provided 400 beds at a cost of £2 a day

, which included 10 shillings to cover extra telephones, laundry, linen and other needs. Efforts were made by the committee arranging these services to ensure compatibility between visitors and hosts. The Olympic Civic Committee booked 8806 people into private homes, of which 2002 were from New Zealand, 948 from the United States, 731 from other overseas nations and the balance of 5125 from across Australia.
For example, Elmar Rahn and his wife Edna of South Rd, Brighton, billeted a visiting Dane. Rahn had competed for Estonia in the decathlon at the 1924 Games in Paris.
