Synopsis
OAKLEIGH and Williamstown did something that set them apart from other Victorian Football Association clubs by playing the last match in which the throw pass was used. It was the 1949 Grand Final, which resulted in a three-point win to the Seagulls and also marked the last appearance of Williamstown captain Ron Todd in senior football. Late in the match when Oakleigh clung to a three-point lead, Todd gained possession on the half-forward line and unselfishly passed to 20th man Fred Matthews. He kicked the ball to Johnny Walker in a pocket and he in turn snapped a goal to put Williamstown ahead. The ball was returned to the centre and seconds later the game ended. Interestingly Todd had scored an aggregate 999 goals, embracing 672 with the Seagulls and 327 with Collingwood.
